Denominational

Bethany Theological Seminary    is a place where Brethren candidates for ministry may seek training for various avenues of service. The denomination's seminary is located on its newly acquired campus at Richmond, Indiana, in association with the Earlham School of Religion.

Brethren Colleges Abroad    ...provides fully accredited study abroad opportunities for either a semester or academic year at one of eleven locations in ten different countries. Courses and subsequent transcripts are compatible with most American colleges and universities.

Colleges and Universities    There are six institutions of higher education affiliated with the Church of the Brethren: Bridgewater, Elizabethtown, Juniata, Manchester, McPherson, and La Verne. Church of the Brethren Collaboration On Admissions    ...is a cooperative effort among COB member educational institutions, to increase the number of Brethren students participating in each facility, and to coordinate their resources for pooling admissions nationally.

Young Center for the Study of Anabaptist and Pietist Groups    Located on the campus of Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania, the Center supports academic research through seminars and lectures for the interpretation of the religious heritage of Anabaptist and Pietist groups.



Educational Resources

Brethren Encyclopedia     is a three-volume, 2,126 page encyclopedia of Brethren life, belief, practice, and history with index, compiled in 1983-1984. This comprehensive work of reference with more than 230 articles on family history, exhaustive compilation of anabaptism and German pietism which has resulted in the growth of the Church of the Brethren, Brethren in Christ, and Mennonites. There are extensive listings, indexes, biographies, illustrations, and even brief histories of local churches. It contains the most up-to-date information ever assembled on all of the Brethren bodies and many illustrations never before published. An additional fourth volume will soon be available.

Brethren Bibliography     These resources will hopefully give you a more expanded understanding of the COB. Many of the authors have made lifelong commitments to making Brethren history, lifestyles, and belief systems more easily understood. Some of the books have excellent cross-references to other works. A few hardcovers are presently out of circulation, but may be acquired from libraries.

These links are intended to focus on building up the inner self with access to online bibles, extensive articles, timelines & chronologies, beliefs & customs, heritage studies, writings of the early church, denominational listings, and manuscript research.

Comparing Translations of the Bible     This exercise was developed so that you may compare different translations of the Bible without the necessity of going to a bookstore and laboriously opening and searching through a multitude of different versions or editions in order to see how they read.

College Reference     Here is an extensive list of educational instruments for research, including world libraries, dictionaries, thesauri, encyclopediae, grammars, and databases, with additional links to financial, entrance standards, testing, and counseling resources.

Beliefs ~ Perspectives
Membership 101 Here is a place to explore the possibility of establishing your membership with the Church of the Brethren. You will learn about vows which you would be expected to affirm during a Baptismal or Reception service, and also the more distinctive beliefs and practices that uniquely accentuate the Church of the Brethren from other denominations.

Brethren Card The Church of the Brethren has historically resisted the theological confinement of creeds and narrow statements of faith; but in order to give non-Brethren a brief introduction to our beliefs and practices, this card was issued many years ago to list the essentials of our understanding of the New Testament.

Brethren Logo of our denomination is comprised of three elements which makes a distinct statement reflecting; our unity in Christ, our compassion for a world in spiritual darkness, our mission to serve others, our responsibility to teach and baptize, and our hope of reward for faithfulness.

Creeds and the Brethren by Frank Ramirez examines the basic reasons why Brethren have traditionally resisted the confinement of a creed by detailing historical moments and theological weaknesses that predictably lay in the pathway to the formation of creeds. Ramirez further gives treatment to the inherent problems of creedalism such as affirmation without investigation or different signposts for different believers on the spiritual journey of faith. Lastly, readers are effectually challenged to define their own approach to developing and defending a system of beliefs.
